Touring a senior living community is one of the most important steps in the placement process. Here in the Bay Area, where monthly costs can range from $4,500 to $12,000 depending on care level and location, asking the right questions helps you compare communities fairly and avoid costly surprises later.

Before You Tour: What to Bring

  • A list of your loved one's current medications and care needs
  • Questions written down so you don't forget under pressure
  • A notebook or phone to record answers
  • Another family member when possible — two sets of eyes catch more

Staffing and Care

  • What is the staff-to-resident ratio during day, evening, and overnight shifts?
  • What certifications and dementia training do caregivers receive?
  • How are care plans created and updated as needs change?
  • Who handles medication management, and what is the error-prevention process?
  • How are medical emergencies handled — and which hospital do you use?
  • Is a nurse or medical director on-site, and how often?

Safety and Security

  • What fall-prevention measures are in place (handrails, lighting, non-slip floors)?
  • How are residents protected from wandering in memory care?
  • What emergency call systems exist in rooms and common areas?
  • How is access controlled for visitors and deliveries?
  • What is the earthquake and fire evacuation plan?

Daily Life and Activities

  • What does a typical day look like for residents?
  • How are activities tailored to different mobility and cognitive levels?
  • Can residents maintain hobbies, faith practices, or cultural traditions?
  • What dining options exist for dietary restrictions?
  • How does the community handle social isolation?

Financial and Contract Questions

  • What is included in the base monthly fee?
  • What services cost extra (medication management, incontinence care, transportation)?
  • What is the policy on rate increases?
  • Are there move-in fees or community fees?
  • What happens if care needs exceed what the community can provide?
  • What is the notice period if you need to leave?

Bay Area-Specific Questions

  • Is the community licensed as an RCFE with the California Department of Social Services?
  • Can you share recent inspection reports or citations?
  • How do you accommodate diverse cultural and dietary needs common in our region?
  • What transportation is available for medical appointments and family visits?

After the Tour

Ask to speak with a current resident's family member. Visit again at a different time of day — mealtimes and evenings reveal a lot. Compare your notes across 3–5 communities using the same criteria. Our team tours communities with Bay Area families regularly and can help you evaluate answers objectively.
